Dale Inglis was born in Canada in 1946 and moved with his family to England in 1979. He joined a group of artists occupying the derelict wharfs in London's Docklands. Working from a studio on the banks of the River Thames, and later from his studios at Pullens Yards in Walworth, South London, and his home in Sussex, Dale Inglis' fascination for the Thames and its bridges has endured for over 40 years. The scene where it flows under Cannon Street Railway Bridge has become a recurring motif in his unique body of work.
Dale Inglis has exhibited in the UK continually for over 30 years. In 2025, he became the first artist to be invited to stage a solo exhibition, RIVER CROSSING, at Nomura’s European headquarters in the City of London. An innovative 360° version of the exhibition was subsequently created to launch the Fine Art exhibition programme at London's newly renovated Walworth Town Hall.
Dale Inglis's art is held in public museums in Canada and Germany, and in private collections in the UK, Canada, the USA, Germany, Italy and Australia.
"There is no tabula rasa, I have always worked in a way where there is something to begin with". Dale Inglis' singular practice involves building up surfaces with a wide range of materials, including varnish, opaque paint, decorator’s paint, salvaged and recycled drawings and sketches, fabrics and pages torn from books.
Once finished and dried, the surfaces are subjected to a process of destruction using paint remover, a heat gun, a blow torch, scrapers and sandpaper, causing the paint to bubble, curl and shrivel, revealing a palimpsest with tantalising fragments of image and meaning. The surface may be modified further, the process of experiment and improvisation continuing until a final image has been created.
While stemming from landscape experience and incorporating landscape references, Dale Inglis' artworks occupy a unique place in the mainstream of modernist abstract practice, with roots in the work of Turner, Rothko and Tapies. In this way, he finds a meeting of the external world and his own inner experiences, where the underlying feeling is for what the poet T.S. Eliot refers to as 'the timeless moment'.
